life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Shonisaurus was a very large group of sea reptiles. These animals are called ichthyosaurs. They lived a long time ago during the Late Triassic age. This was about 227 million years ago. They were huge creatures that lived in the ocean. Scientists study their fossils to learn about ancient life.

These reptiles had a very specific way of moving. They had a long snout on their faces. Their flippers were much longer and narrower than other ichthyosaurs. For a long time, people thought they had round bodies. Studies since the early 1990s show they were actually slender. They also had bodies that were relatively deep.

Finding these fossils is a big part of science history. Large deposits were first found in Nevada in 1920. Later, workers excavated the area to find more. Charles Camp and Samuel Welles led work there in 1954. Camp named the genus in 1976. The name means "lizard from the Shoshone Mountains."

There are many important facts about these animals. At least 37 fossils of Shonisaurus popularis were found in Nevada. This species became the state fossil of Nevada in 1984. Some fossils were found in Canada and Alaska too. One species, Shonisaurus sikanniensis, was found in British Columbia. It lived during the middle Norian age.

We can learn how they lived by looking at their teeth. Shonisaurus was a predator that hunted in the sea. It was a macrophagous raptorial predator. This means it used its teeth to catch big prey. It ate animals with backbones and shelled mollusks. These mollusks included creatures called cephalopods.
