Ceratophryidae

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Common horned frogs are a special group of animals. They belong to a family called Ceratophryidae. These frogs live in South America. You might think they all have horns. Some species have horn-like bumps near their eyes. Others do not have these bumps at all. They are famous for having very large heads. Their big mouths help them eat a lot.

These frogs are ambush predators. This means they hide and wait for food. They can eat very large prey. They eat lizards and other frogs. They even eat small mammals.

They often live in dry, arid areas. These frogs are seasonal breeders. They lay many small eggs in water. The babies start as tadpoles. Some tadpoles eat meat. Other tadpoles are grazers that eat plants.

Scientists have studied these frogs for a long time. The group was once a subfamily. It was part of the Leptodactylidae family. Later, it became its own family. Now, it is a smaller family. It has three genera, which are groups of related species. One group is Ceratophrys. Another group is Lepidobatrachus. The last group is Chacophrys.

We can learn about them from old fossils. The oldest fossils are from the Miocene epoch. One famous fossil was Beelzebufo. It lived in the Late Cretaceous of Madagascar. Scientists once thought it was a horned frog. Now they think it is just a close relative. Another fossil is Baurubatrachus from Brazil. It also lived in the Late Cretaceous.

There are 12 living species in this family today. The Ceratophrys group has 8 species. The Lepidobatrachus group has 3 living species. One fossil species is also in this group. The Chacophrys group has only 1 species. This species is called Chacophrys pierottii. Some people keep these frogs in homes. This is called herpetoculture. It is a way to study them closely.
