True toads belong to a group called Bufonidae.

They live on almost every continent. You can find them in dry areas or wet rainforests.

Most true toads look bumpy or warty. They are also toothless. This means they have no teeth at all. Toads have two special spots on their heads. We call these parotoid glands.

These glands hold a poison called bufotoxin. If a toad feels stressed, it lets out this poison. This helps keep the toad safe from other animals. Some toads, like the cane toad, are very toxic.

Most toads lay eggs in long strings. These eggs hatch into tadpoles. However, some toads are different. Their eggs hatch directly into tiny toads.

Many toads have a special part called a Bidder's organ. This organ can become an ovary under the right conditions. There are over 570 species of true toads in the world. They belong to more than 50 different groups.
