These toads can be grey, olive, or brown. They often have spots on their skin. Their eyes are large with vertical slits.

This toad has a very special way of being a dad. In the spring, a female lays eggs in jelly strings. The male then wraps these eggs around his back legs. He can carry up to 150 eggs at once. He carries them for three to eight weeks. To keep them safe, he stays in damp places. He might even swim to keep them wet. He can also use his skin to protect the eggs.

When it is time, he goes to calm water. The eggs hatch into tadpoles. These tadpoles grow and develop limbs. They lose their tails through metamorphosis. This is the way they change into young toads. They eat insects and other small creatures to grow.
