This toad belongs to the Alytidae family. It lives in many parts of Europe. You can find them in France, Belgium, and Germany. They also live in the Netherlands and Switzerland. Some live in Portugal and Spain. In the United Kingdom, they are an introduced species. These toads like many places to live. They stay in forests, near rivers, or even in urban gardens.

This toad has a very interesting way of raising babies. In the spring or summer, a female finds a male to mate. The female lays a mass of eggs in strings of jelly. The male then wraps these egg strings around his back legs. This is why he is called a midwife toad. He can carry up to 150 eggs at once. He might even carry three different groups of eggs at the same time. He carries them for three to eight weeks until they hatch.

Being a dad is a big job for the male. He must keep the eggs safe and moist. He stays in damp places during the day. If the eggs look dry, he will go for a swim. He can even use his skin to protect the eggs from infection. When the eggs are ready, he finds calm water. This could be a pond, a ditch, or even a flowerpot saucer. The eggs hatch into tadpoles. These tadpoles grow and change into young toads through metamorphosis.

There are many different types of this toad. Scientists call these different types subspecies. There are four subspecies of the common midwife toad. One subspecies, A. o. obstetricans, has the largest home range. It spreads from the Iberian Peninsula up into the rest of Europe. The other three subspecies live only in the Iberian Peninsula. These groups formed during the Plio-Pleistocene climatic fluctuations. This was a time of changing weather in the past.

If you saw a midwife toad, you might notice its shape. It is usually broad and stocky. The females are generally larger than the males. Their skin is mostly smooth but has some small warts. Some warts are large and reddish or yellow. Their color can change from grey to olive or brown. They have large heads and big eyes. The pupils in their eyes look like vertical slits. They eat insects and other small creatures to stay healthy.
