The Alytidae are a group of primitive frogs.

Many people call them midwife toads or painted frogs. Most of these animals live in Europe. You can also find three species in northwest Africa. One special species lives in Israel. People once thought this Israel species was extinct. That means they thought it was gone forever.

Luckily, they found it again. This is the Hula painted frog.

This family has three main groups of living things.

The first group is called Alytes. These look a bit like toads. They are often found living on land. The second group is called Discoglossus. These are smoother and look more like frogs. They prefer to stay in the water. The third group is called Latonia. All species in this family have tadpoles. These tadpole babies always live in ponds.

Scientists use different names to talk about these frogs. This family is also known as Discoglossidae. However, the name Alytidae is the older name. Because it is older, it has priority in science books. Some researchers have a different idea. They think Alytes and Discoglossus are different enough to be separate. If they are right, the name Discoglossidae might be used again. This shows how science can change when people learn more.

There are many specific names for these frogs.

In the Alytes group, there is the Iberian midwife toad. There is also the Moroccan midwife toad and the Majorcan midwife toad. The common midwife toad is another one. In the Discoglossus group, you find the common painted frog. You can also find the Spanish painted frog and the Corsican painted frog. There are even more, like the Tyrrhenian painted frog and the Moroccan species.

These frogs are part of a very old history.

Some fossil frogs were called discoglossids too. These fossils share old traits with the living frogs. However, they are probably not closely related to the Alytidae. Other groups like Bombina used to be in this family. Now, they have moved to a different family called Bombinatoridae. Learning about these frogs helps us see how life changes over a long time.
