People call them painted frogs or midwife toads. Most live in Europe. Three kinds live in northwest Africa. One kind lives in Israel. This frog was once thought to be extinct. That means people thought it was gone forever. But people found it again!

This frog is the Hula painted frog.

There are three main groups in this family. The first group is Alytes. These look like toads. They often live on land.

The second group is Discoglossus. These are smoother. They look more like frogs. They prefer to live in water. The third group is Latonia. All species in this family have tadpoles. These tadpole babies live in ponds.
