Many people use the name toad for certain frogs. Most have dry and leathery skin. They also have short legs. You might see large bumps on their skin. These bumps cover the parotoid glands. People often call these bumps warts. However, they are not real warts. They do not come from an infection. You cannot get warts by touching a toad.

Toads have a very interesting way of life. They move between dry areas and water. They travel to ponds or lakes to breed. This means they go there to make babies. Many toads show breeding site fidelity. This is a way they return to their natal ponds. They go back to the place where they were born. This helps them find mates easily.

Toads use sound to find each other. Male toads make a special call. This is called an advertisement vocalization. This sound helps females recognize them. It also helps them find their kin. Kin are close family members. Toads recognize their family members by these calls. This helps them avoid mating with siblings. Avoiding inbreeding is a very important job for them.
