Sea turtles are amazing reptiles that live in the ocean.

There are seven different species of sea turtles alive today. These include the flatback, green, hawksbill, leatherback, loggerhead, Kemp's ridley, and olive ridley. Five of these seven species are listed as threatened with extinction. This means they face a high risk of disappearing from the world.

Most sea turtles have hard shells. However, the leatherback is different because it has a leathery shell. The leatherback is the largest species of all. It can grow over 1.8 meters long and weigh up to 640 kg.

Sea turtles have a special body shape called a fusiform shape. This means their bodies taper at both ends. This shape helps them swim fast by reducing drag. Drag is the force that tries to slow things down in the water. Because of this shape, sea turtles cannot pull their heads or limbs into their shells. This is different from many land turtles.

They also have a way to handle salt. Since they live in the ocean, they must get rid of extra salt. They use a special gland near their eyes to make salty tears. This helps them keep their bodies healthy while swimming in salty water.

Sea turtles have been around for a very long time. Fossil evidence shows marine turtles lived during the Late Jurassic period. That was about 150 million years ago. Scientists have found fossils of marine turtles in places like Europe and Africa. One very large fossil species is called Leviathanochelys. It lived in the oceans of Europe during the Late Cretaceous. This giant turtle was one of the largest to ever exist.

Adult females swim to sandy beaches to lay their eggs. They use their hind flippers to dig a circular hole. A female might lay between 50 and 350 eggs in one nest. The temperature of the sand decides if the babies are male or female. Warm sand produces females, while cooler sand produces males.

After the eggs hatch, the tiny babies must crawl from the sand to the sea.

Sea turtles live in almost every ocean except for the cold polar regions. The Kemp's ridley is the smallest species. It is found in the Gulf of Mexico and near the United States. The flatback is unique because it lives only near Australia, Papua New Guinea, and Indonesia.

Many young turtles spend their first few years floating in mats of seaweed. These mats provide food and a safe place to hide. As they grow into adults, they move closer to the shore. This helps them find the right places to eat and mate.
