A tortoise is a special kind of reptile. They belong to a group called Testudinidae. Most tortoises have a hard shell to stay safe from danger.

Many tortoises can pull their necks and heads straight back into the shell. This helps them hide from threats. Tortoises can be very different in size. The Galápagos giant tortoise can grow to more than 400 kilograms. Other kinds, like the speckled Cape tortoise, are much smaller.

Life for a tortoise starts in a hidden nest. A mother tortoise usually lays her eggs at night. She covers them with sand, soil, or old plants.

The eggs stay in the nest for 60 to 120 days. When the baby is ready, it uses an egg tooth to break the shell. The tiny hatchling then digs to the surface. It carries a small sac of food for its first few days.

Young tortoises often eat worms or insects to get extra protein for growing.

Tortoises are famous for living a very long time. They are the longest-living land animals on Earth. Most species live between 80 and 150 years.

One tortoise named Adwaita may have lived for 255 years. He lived at the Alipore Zoo in India. Another famous tortoise was named Tu'i Malila. She lived with the Tongan royal family. She was born in 1777 and died in 1965. This means she lived to be 188 years old.

Scientists study how tortoises live and move. Some tortoises are very good at traveling across the ocean. Even though they cannot swim, they can survive months without food or water. They have been known to drift for more than 740 kilometers.

This helps them reach new islands. On these islands, they can grow into giant species. They eat mostly plants like grass, flowers, and fruit.

Some may even eat birds or insects.

People often use different names for these animals. In America, people use the word "turtle" for many kinds. They use "tortoise" for the ones that live on land.

In Britain, the names are used differently. Some people in Australia call freshwater turtles "tortoises" too. This can be confusing for scientists. It is helpful to know if an animal lives on land or in water. This helps us understand their special lives.
