Their shells look like a round dome. A hinge at the bottom lets the shell close tightly. This helps the turtle hide from predators. There are different types of box turtles. Some live in North America in the genus Terrapene. Others are Asian box turtles from the genera Cuora or Pyxidea. These groups are actually quite different. They live in different places and act in different ways. They do not even belong to the same family.

These turtles have a very interesting way of eating. They are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and animals. Young turtles need lots of protein. They mostly eat meat like insects, worms, and snails. As they grow up, they eat more plants. Adults eat things like berries, flowers, and fungi. They use sharp eyes and a keen sense of smell to find food. They can even find animals that died on roads. They might eat fish, frogs, or even small birds and eggs.

Scientists have learned many cool things about these animals. A study at Davidson College found something surprising. It showed that box turtles can make loud sounds. They use their jaws to make noises over 75 dB. This volume can scare away a predator. It can also work as a mating call. Box turtles can live for a very long time. Most live for over twenty years. Some have lived for 40 or 50 years. There are even unverified stories of them living for 100 years.

In the wild, many box turtles face hard jobs. In Asia, some are caught for food markets. In North America, many lose their homes to farms. New roads and cities also break up their habitats. Turtles often face danger when crossing these roads. They also face a bacterial infection found in 2011. Many hatchlings are taken from the wild to be sold as pets. A study in Texas found over 7,000 were taken. A study in Louisiana found about 30,000 were taken over 41 months.

It is important to understand how box turtles live. They do not like to be moved far away. If moved more than half a mile, they may get lost. They might spend years searching for their old home. This can stop them from finding mates. They also get stressed if people touch them too much. In a home, they need sun and a varied diet. Without these, they can get sick or stop growing. It is best to let them stay in the wild.
