A hinge at the bottom lets them close the shell tight. This helps them hide from predators.

These turtles eat many different things. They are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and animals. Young turtles eat mostly meat like bugs and worms. As they grow, they eat more plants. They use their sharp eyes and good smell to find food. They might eat berries, flowers, or even snails.

Box turtles can live a long time. Most live over twenty years. Some live for 40 or 50 years. A study found they can make loud sounds. They use their jaws to make sounds over 75 dB. This can scare away enemies. It can also be a mating call.

In the wild, many turtles face danger. Some lose their homes when forests are turned into farms. Others are taken from the wild to be pets. This can hurt the group of turtles in that area. It is best to let them stay in their homes.
