The wood turtle has a very special shell. It is called a carapace. This shell has a bumpy pattern. The bumps look like little pyramids. This shell is also rough to the touch. This is why its name is *insculpta*.

These turtles eat many kinds of food. They eat on land and in water. They like to sit on logs in the sun. This helps them stay warm. In the winter, they sleep in river mud. This is called hibernation. In the hot summer, they rest in the shade. This is called estivation.

Males are often larger than females. Males also have bright red or orange skin on their legs.
