It has a special substance in its blood that works like antifreeze. This helps keep its cells from freezing during long, cold winters. When it gets very cold, the turtle hibernates in the mud. It sleeps at the bottom of the water until spring. The turtle needs warmth from the sun to stay active. Because of this, it spends many hours basking on logs or rocks.

A naturalist named Johann Gottlob Schneider first categorized them in 1783. Later, John Edward Gray gave them the scientific name Chrysemys picta in 1855. Fossils show these turtles have been around for a very long time. Some fossils found in Nebraska are about 15 million years old.
