The painted turtle (Chrysemys picta) is the most widespread native turtle in North America.

It inhabits relatively slow-moving fresh waters across a vast range. This range extends from southern Canada down to northern Mexico. It also spans from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. These turtles prefer large wetlands with long periods of inundation. They also look for areas with plenty of emergent vegetation.

Because they can live in human-disturbed settings, they remain very abundant.

One of the most remarkable features of this species is its cold tolerance.

The painted turtle is specially adapted to survive freezing temperatures for long periods. It achieves this through an antifreeze-like substance in its blood. This substance prevents its cells from freezing during harsh winters. During these cold months, the turtle hibernates in the mud at the bottom of water bodies. Since they rely on warmth from their surroundings, they are only active during the day. They spend many hours basking on logs or rocks to regulate their temperature.

Taxonomically, the painted turtle belongs to the genus Chrysemys. This genus is part of the Emydidae family, which are pond turtles.

The scientific name is quite descriptive. The genus name comes from Ancient Greek words for "gold" and "freshwater tortoise." The species name, picta, comes from the Latin word for "colored." There are three main regionally based subspecies: the eastern, the midland, and the western.

The southern painted turtle (C. dorsalis) was once a subspecies but is now generally considered a separate species.

Scientists can distinguish the three subspecies by looking at their shells.

The eastern subspecies (C. p. picta) has a top shell with straight-aligned segments, or scutes. Its bottom shell is usually plain yellow or lightly spotted. The midland subspecies (C. p. marginata) is harder to identify. It features a characteristic symmetrical dark gray mark in the center of its bottom shell.

The western subspecies (C. p. bellii) is the largest of the group. It has a mesh-like pattern of light lines on its top shell. Its bottom shell has a large colored splotch that often includes red hues.

The evolutionary history of these turtles is quite deep.

Fossils show that the painted turtle existed as far back as 15 million years ago. The oldest samples were discovered in Nebraska. These subspecies likely evolved during the last ice age, between 100,000 and 11,000 years ago. During this time, populations were isolated in different geographic areas. When the glaciers retreated about 11,000 years ago, the turtles moved north. Some scientists believe the midland subspecies may have resulted from hybridization.

In the wild, adult painted turtles can live for more than 55 years.

They follow a specific life cycle involving mating in the spring and autumn. Females move onto land to dig nests and lay eggs between late spring and mid-summer. Once hatched, the turtles grow until they reach sexual maturity. This takes between 2 to 9 years for males and 6 to 16 years for females. They eat a variety of foods, including aquatic vegetation, algae, and small creatures. This includes insects, crustaceans, and fish. They are even able to find prey in heavily clouded water.

The painted turtle holds a special place in both nature and culture.

In the traditional tales of Algonquian tribes, the colorful turtle was a trickster. In modern times, four U.S. states have honored them. Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, and Vermont have all named the painted turtle their official reptile. While habitat loss and road killings are threats, their adaptability helps them thrive. They remain a vital and visible part of North American freshwater ecosystems.
