They live in warm, still water like ponds, lakes, or slow rivers. Because people love them as pets, they are often released into new places. This has made them one of the most invasive species in the world.

These turtles have a special way of staying warm. They are poikilothermic, which means they depend on the temperature of their environment.

To keep their body temperature right, they must sunbathe frequently. They often climb onto rocks or logs to soak up the sun.

Sometimes, you might even see them basking in a group on top of each other. When they feel unsafe, they can pull their head, legs, and tail inside their shell. Their shell has two main parts: the top carapace and the bottom plastron.

Scientists have studied these turtles for a long time. They were once called Troost's turtles. This name honored an American scientist named Gerard Troost.

Today, we use the scientific name Trachemys scripta elegans. The name "red-eared slider" comes from two things. First, they have a bright red stripe behind their eyes. Second, they can slide very quickly into the water.

There are many interesting facts about how they grow and live. A red-eared slider can live for 20 to 30 years.

Males also have much longer claws on their front feet than females. This helps them during mating and courtship displays.

Red-eared sliders are found on six out of seven continents.
