The eastern newt is a common animal found in eastern North America.

These creatures live in many places like small lakes, ponds, and streams. They also enjoy wet forests and damp woodlands nearby. Some people even keep them as pets in aquariums. They are very important to nature because they eat many insects. By eating things like beetles and ants, they help keep ecosystems in balance.

This animal goes through three different life stages. First, it starts as an aquatic larva, which is like a tiny tadpole. This stage lasts about two to five months and the larvae have gills to breathe underwater. Next, the newt becomes a red eft. This is a land-dwelling juvenile stage with bright orange skin. The red eft can travel far to find new ponds. Finally, the newt becomes an aquatic adult. The adult has olive green skin and a yellow belly.

Being bright is a way for the newt to stay safe. This is called aposematism, which means using warning colors. The bright orange skin of the red eft tells predators that the newt is not good to eat. The newt produces a toxin called tetrodotoxin in its skin. This toxin can cause muscle paralysis or make a predator very sick. Even though it is a strong defense, some animals like the praying mantis can still eat them.

There are four different subspecies of the eastern newt. One is the red-spotted newt, and another is the broken-striped newt. There is also the central newt, which can be brown or green with black dots. The peninsula newt is a special kind that might skip the red eft stage entirely. In the wild, these newts can live for 12 to 15 years. They are very sensitive to the world around them. If water quality changes, the newts will notice.

Eastern newts have some amazing biological abilities. If they lose a limb due to an injury, they can regenerate it. This means they can grow a whole new leg back. They can even regrow their spinal cord. They also use a special system to find their way home. This is called magnetoreception, which helps them use magnetic fields to navigate. They can even travel over 70 meters in a single night.
