These animals have three life stages. First, they are larvae. These are small and live in water. They have gills to help them breathe. Next, they become red efts. These are bright orange or red. They live on land for a few years. This stage helps them move to new ponds. Finally, they become aquatic adults. They live in the water again. Adults have olive green skin and a yellow belly.

Being bright is a way to stay safe. This is called aposematism. It is a warning to predators. The newt has a toxin in its skin. This toxin is called tetrodotoxin. It can make predators sick. This helps the newt survive.

Newts are also very tough. They can grow back lost limbs. They can even regrow their spinal cord. This is a special way they heal. Eastern newts are very important. They eat many insects and snails. This helps keep nature in balance.
