Most adults live underground in burrows. They live alone and eat small bugs. Many have bright colors on dark skin. Some have blue spots or yellow bars.

These salamanders start their lives in the water. The babies have gills to help them breathe. They also have large fins on their tails. As they grow, they go through metamorphosis. This is a way to change from water life to land life. Their gills and fins disappear. They grow lungs to breathe air. They also grow eyelids to protect their eyes.

Some species never change. They keep their gills and stay in the water. The axolotl is a famous example.

Scientists study these animals to learn a lot. Axolotls can regrow lost limbs. They use a mass of cells called a blastema to do this. This helps us learn how bodies fix themselves.
