Most amphibians change as they grow. They often move from water to land. But axolotls stay in the water all their lives. This is called neoteny. Neoteny means they keep their baby features as adults. One big feature is their external gills. These are pink stalks that stick out from their heads. The gills help them breathe underwater.

Axolotls have a special way to heal. They can regrow lost limbs and tails. They can even regrow parts of their heart and brain. This is called regeneration. When they are hurt, cells form a mass called a blastema. This mass helps build the new body part.

In the wild, axolotls live in Mexico. They once lived in many lakes and wetlands. Now, they are near extinction in nature. Pollution and new fish make it hard for them to survive. However, many axolotls live in tanks. People keep them as pets or use them for science.
