An olm has a long, snake-like body. It is usually pink or white. This color comes from having very little pigment in its skin. Some olms are dark brown or black. They have small legs with few toes. The front legs have three toes. The back legs have only two toes.

Because it lives in total darkness, the olm is blind. Its eyes are covered by skin. It uses other ways to feel the world. It has a very strong sense of smell. It can also feel vibrations in the water. It uses special organs to sense tiny electric fields.

Food is hard to find in deep caves. The olm is very good at surviving without meals. It can live for up to 10 years without eating! It eats small things like snails and shrimp. It swallows its food whole.
