Most newts are semiaquatic. This means they live part of the time in water and part on land. There are more than 100 types of newts. You can find them in North America, Europe, North Africa, and Asia.

Newts grow through three life stages. First, they start as aquatic larvae. These babies live in water and have feathery gills to breathe. Next, they change into land-dwelling young ones. We call these young newts efts.

Finally, they grow into adults. Adults often return to the water to breed. They lay eggs on plants to keep them safe.

Newts have amazing bodies. If they lose a limb, they can grow it back. Their cells can make a new arm or leg.

Some newts are also toxic. This means they make bad chemicals in their skin. This helps them stay safe from predators. However, these toxins only hurt if they are eaten or enter a wound.
