A newt is a special type of salamander.

They belong to a group called Pleurodelinae. Most newts are semiaquatic. This means they live in water and on land. They move between these two worlds during their lives. There are more than 100 known species of newts. You can find them in North America, Europe, North Africa, and Asia.

Newts grow through three different life stages. First, they start as aquatic larvae in the water. These babies have feathery gills to help them breathe. Next, they undergo metamorphosis to become land-dwelling juveniles. These young ones are called efts.

Finally, they grow into adults with lizard-like bodies. Some adults live on land but return to water to breed. Most European species live on land and only visit water to breed. North American species often return to the water after being efts.

Newts have amazing bodies that can heal. Their skin is glandular and semipermeable. If a newt is injured, its cells can do something incredible. The cells at the injury site can undifferentiate. This means they change back into a simpler state. Then, they reproduce quickly to create a new limb or organ.

This ability helps them regrow parts of their bodies. Even their hearts can heal if they are punctured.

Some newts use chemicals to stay safe. Many species produce toxins in their skin secretions. This is a defense mechanism against predators.

The Pacific newts, like the rough-skinned newt, are very toxic. This newt produces enough tetrodotoxin to kill an adult human. However, these toxins are only dangerous if eaten or if they enter a wound. Garter snakes are some of the only predators that can resist these toxins.

People have studied newts for a very long time. The name "newt" comes from old English words. In the past, people called them "water-eft" or "land-eft."

Scientists like Tschudi used the name Pleurodelinae in 1838. This name is based on the genus Pleurodeles, which means "having prominent ribs." Newts are fascinating creatures that connect the water to the land. They remind us how much life can change as it grows.
