The axolotl is a very special kind of salamander.

Most amphibians go through a big change called metamorphosis. They usually start in water and then move to land. Axolotls are different because they stay in the water their whole lives. This happens because of a trait called neoteny. Neoteny means they keep their baby features even when they are adults. They keep their feathery external gills to help them breathe underwater. These gills are pink stalks that stick out from the sides of their heads.

Axolotls have a remarkable way of healing their bodies. This amazing ability is called regeneration. If they lose a limb or a tail, they can grow it back. They can even regrow parts of their eyes, heart, and brain. When an injury happens, a group of cells forms a mass called a blastema.

This blastema is a special group of cells that builds the new body part. Scientists study them to learn how these cells know how to rebuild complex things. They can even accept transplants from other axolotls without any problems.

These creatures have a long history in Mexico. The name axolotl comes from the Nahuatl language. It can mean many things, like "water sprite" or "water dog." The name is linked to Xolotl, an Aztec god.

In the past, axolotls lived in many lakes and wetlands in the Mexican highlands. This included places like Lake Xochimilco and Lake Chalco. They were even a common food for the native Mexica people. Today, many of those original lakes are gone because of the growth of Mexico City.

Axolotls are now in a very difficult spot in the wild. They are listed as critically endangered by the IUCN. There are only about 50 to 1,000 adult axolotls left in nature.

This is happening because their water is polluted by cities. Also, new fish like tilapia and carp have been put into their water. These fish can be a problem for the small axolotls. However, many axolotls live safely in tanks for science or as pets.

It is fun to see how axolotls connect to our world. You might see them in a zoo or a public aquarium. Some people even keep them in small tanks at home.

They are also very famous in popular culture. You can find characters that look just like them in video games. Even though they are quite different from us, their amazing bodies help us learn about life. They remind us how wonderful and unique nature can be.
