Because they have been around for so long, people call them "living fossils." Their family group, the Cryptobranchidae, dates back 170 million years. This makes them a very special part of Earth's history. They are currently considered critically endangered in the wild. This is because their homes are being lost to pollution and overcollection.

This animal has a very unique way of finding and eating food.

It has small eyes and cannot see very well. To make up for this, it uses special sensory nodes. These are tiny spots along its body that feel vibrations in the water. When it finds prey, it uses a method called suction feeding. The salamander opens its wide mouth very quickly. This creates a rush of water that pulls the food inside.

Its strong jaws and flexible throat help it swallow large items like crabs.

Scientists have learned a lot about these animals through many studies.

For a long time, people thought there was only one type of Chinese giant salamander. However, new research using DNA has shown there are actually several different groups. In 2018, a study found five wild groups, also called clades. One group was named Andrias sligoi in 2019. Another new species, Andrias cheni, was described in 2023. Even more recent work in 2022 identified Andrias jiangxiensis. These discoveries help us understand how different these animals really are.

There are many specific facts about how these salamanders live and grow.

An adult can grow to be very long and heavy. In 2007, a salamander at a farm in Zhangjiajie was documented as being very large. In 2015, another huge individual was found in a cave in Chongqing. These animals can live for a long time. Captive individuals have been known to live at least 60 years. During the breeding season, females lay between 400 and 500 eggs. The males stay to guard these eggs until they hatch.

Watching a giant salamander can feel like looking at a piece of history.

Their sounds are so unique that people in China call them "infant fish." This is because their cries can sound like a small human child. They are also very hardy animals. They can survive for several years without eating by using stored energy in their liver. This ability helps them survive when food is hard to find. Even though they are facing hard times in the wild, they remain one of nature's most interesting wonders.
