Its body is dark gray or black. It is fully armored with scales on its belly. This armor helps protect its body.

These alligators have a very interesting way of living. In the summer, they are nocturnal. This means they are active at night to stay cool. They also do this to avoid people. In the winter, they go into a deep sleep called brumation.

They use their heads and front legs to dig burrows. These burrows can have many rooms and even small pools. The burrows keep them safe and warm during the cold months.

People have known about these alligators for a long time. They have been in Chinese books since the third century. In the late 1200s, Marco Polo wrote about them too. He saw them in lakes and rivers. He said they lived in caverns during the day. Some people even thought they inspired the stories of Chinese dragons.

Scientists have studied these animals closely for many years. A French naturalist named Albert-Auguste Fauvel described them in 1879. He gave them the scientific name Alligator sinensis. The name sinensis means they belong to China. These alligators have a bony plate on their upper eyelids. This is a feature that is rare in American alligators. They can live for 50 years in the wild.

Learning about alligators helps us see how nature works. For example, the heat of the nest decides if a baby is male or female. This is called temperature-dependent sex determination. The mother also helps the tiny babies reach the water. They eat many things like fish and insects.
