Olm

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The olm is a very special kind of aquatic salamander.

It is the only species in its group that lives only in caves in Europe. These animals live in the dark waters of the Dinaric Alps. They stay in water that flows through limestone rock. This area includes parts of Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Because they live underwater, they eat, sleep, and breed there too.

Living in total darkness changed how the olm works. Its eyes are undeveloped and covered by skin, so it is blind. To see the world, it uses other senses instead. The olm has a very strong sense of smell and hearing.

It can also feel tiny electric fields using special organs on its head. It even uses a lateral line to feel water moving nearby. These tools help the olm find food and move around in the dark.

A naturalist named Valvasor first wrote about the olm in 1689. He wrote in a book called Glory of the Duchy of Carniola. He said that heavy rains sometimes washed them out of underground waters. Local people used to think they were the babies of cave dragons. The name "olm" comes from a German word. People might have used it as a different name for a salamander. In Slovenia, people call them močeril.

The olm has a long, snake-like body that can reach 30 cm.

Most olms are pink or yellowish-white because they lack pigment. However, one group called the black olm is always dark brown or black. Their skin is very thin, so you can see red gills through it. They have small legs with very few toes. The front legs have three toes, and the back legs have only two.

Finding food in a cave is a hard job. The olm eats small things like snails, shrimp, and insects. It does not chew but swallows its food whole.

Because food is rare, the olm is amazing at surviving. It can live for up to 10 years without eating any food at all. It stores energy in its liver to help it stay alive. This helps the olm thrive in a place where meals are hard to find.
