The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is a unique species of mole salamander.

Unlike most amphibians, these creatures exhibit a trait called neoteny. This means they reach sexual maturity without undergoing metamorphosis. Most salamanders start as aquatic larvae and transform into land-dwelling adults. Axolotls skip this change and remain fully aquatic for their entire lives. They keep their juvenile features, such as their feathery external gills. This unusual way of living makes them a vital subject for biological study.

To understand how an axolotl breathes, we must look at its gills. Three pairs of external gill stalks, called rami, extend from behind the head. These stalks are lined with tiny filaments known as fimbriae. These filaments increase the surface area available for gas exchange. This process allows the animal to pull oxygen from the water. Axolotls also use a method called buccal pumping to breathe. They gulp air from the water's surface to fill their lungs. This can happen in a two-stroke or four-stroke manner using compression forces.

Axolotls are famous for their incredible ability to perform tissue regeneration. Most animals heal by forming scar tissue, but axolotls do not. They can regrow entire limbs, tails, and even parts of their eyes and heart. They can even restore portions of their central nervous system, including parts of the brain. This process requires three specific things: a wound epithelium, nerve signaling, and specific limb axis cells. First, a wound epidermis quickly covers the injury site. Then, cells divide to form a mass called a blastema.

This blastema provides the building blocks to reorganize and grow a new limb.

Scientists are particularly interested in the genetic reasons for this healing. In 2018, researchers published the axolotl genome, which was the largest animal genome completed at that time. The sequence is about 32 billion base pairs long. This makes the axolotl genome roughly ten times larger than the human genome. Despite this massive size, it encodes a similar number of proteins. The extra size comes from a large amount of repetitive sequences and very large introns. Studying these specific genetic pathways helps researchers understand how complex body parts are rebuilt.

The axolotl has deep roots in Mexican history and culture. The name "axolotl" comes from the Nahuatl language. It has many possible translations, such as "water sprite," "water dog," or "water twin." The name is connected to Xolotl, an Aztec god of fire, lightning, and the dead.

Originally, these salamanders lived in the interconnected wetlands of the Mexican highlands. This included the lakes of Xochimilco, Chalco, Texcoco, and Zumpango. During the colonial era, they were even a staple food for the native Mexica people.

Today, the survival of wild axolotls is at great risk. They are currently listed as critically endangered by the IUCN. Scientists estimate there are only 50 to 1,000 adult individuals left in the wild. This decline is caused by the urbanization of Mexico City, which pollutes the remaining waterways. Additionally, invasive species like tilapia and carp have been introduced to their habitats. While wild populations struggle, a large captive population exists. Axolotls are now common in zoos, public aquariums, and even as pets.

Axolotls also connect to the wider world through modern technology and media. Because they are easy to keep in tanks, they have become popular in the pet trade. Breeders often create different colors, such as leucistic, xanthic, or albino variants.

Beyond biology, they have become icons in contemporary culture. You can find them appearing as characters in video games and other media. Their unique biology continues to bridge the gap between natural wonder and scientific discovery.
