Sea turtles have a special body shape called a fusiform shape. This means their bodies taper at both ends. This shape helps them swim fast by reducing drag. Drag is the force that tries to slow things down in the water. Because of this shape, sea turtles cannot pull their heads or limbs into their shells. This is different from many land turtles.

They also have a way to handle salt. Since they live in the ocean, they must get rid of extra salt. They use a special gland near their eyes to make salty tears. This helps them keep their bodies healthy while swimming in salty water.

Sea turtles have been around for a very long time. Fossil evidence shows marine turtles lived during the Late Jurassic period. That was about 150 million years ago. Scientists have found fossils of marine turtles in places like Europe and Africa. One very large fossil species is called Leviathanochelys. It lived in the oceans of Europe during the Late Cretaceous. This giant turtle was one of the largest to ever exist.

While males and females are generally the same size, they can be distinguished in adults by their tails. Males have long tails with a cloacal opening near the tip. Females have shorter tails with the opening near the base. Hatchlings and sub-adults do not show these differences.

Sea turtles inhabit almost all oceans, though they avoid the polar regions. Many species spend their early years in the pelagic zone, or open ocean.

During their first three to five years, they often float in seaweed mats, such as Sargassum. These mats provide essential food and shelter. As they reach adulthood, they move closer to continental shelves and coastal waters. Some species show high levels of philopatry, meaning females return to the exact beach where they were hatched to lay their own eggs. This can happen every two to four years.

Because they live in saltwater, sea turtles must manage their internal salt levels through osmoregulation. Their kidneys cannot produce urine that is more concentrated than seawater. To solve this, they use a specialized lachrymal gland located in the orbital cavity. This gland produces tears with a higher salt concentration than the surrounding ocean.

This is especially important for the leatherback, which eats jellyfish. Jellyfish fluids have a salt concentration similar to seawater, creating a high osmotic challenge. Today, many sea turtle species face threats, with five of the seven species listed as threatened with extinction on the IUCN Red List.
