Sea snake

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Sea snakes are amazing reptiles that live in the ocean.

Most of these snakes spend their entire lives in warm saltwater. They belong to two main groups called Hydrophiinae and Laticaudinae. Most sea snakes are venomous, which means they have poison to catch prey. However, one group called Emydocephalus is different because it eats fish eggs. These animals are some of the most aquatic air-breathing vertebrates on Earth. They are very similar to the whales and dolphins we know.

Living underwater requires special ways to work. Since they do not have gills, they must swim to the surface to breathe. Their lungs are very large and stretch almost the whole length of their bodies. These big lungs help them store air for long dives. Some snakes can even stay under the water for a few hours. They can also get about 30% of their oxygen through their skin. This special trick helps the black-and-yellow sea snake stay submerged for a long time.

Scientists have studied these snakes to understand how they evolved. Sea kraits, which are in the Laticauda group, are considered more primitive. This means they have traits that are more like older snake types. Unlike most sea snakes, sea kraits can still move on land. They have large scales on their bellies to help them grip the ground. Most other sea snakes have smaller scales that make them helpless on land. They have traded land movement for better swimming skills.

Sea snakes live in many different places and sizes.

They are mostly found in the warm Indian and Pacific Oceans. One species, Pelamis platurus, has a huge range that reaches from Africa to the Americas. This snake travels further than almost any other reptile. Most sea snakes live in shallow coastal waters near islands. However, some species like Pelamis platurus live in the open ocean. The largest sea snake is called Hydrophis spiralis. It can grow to a very impressive size.

These snakes use many senses to find food and stay safe. Their eyes are small and have round pupils. Because water can make it hard to see or smell, they have unique ways to feel things. Some snakes have special organs on their heads to sense moving fish. Others, like the olive sea snake, have light-sensing parts in their skin. This helps them hide in coral holes during the day. They also use special glands under their tongues to push out extra salt. This keeps their bodies healthy while they live in the salty sea.
