It is a way to study a real-world event or person. A doctor might use a case study to study one patient. A business leader might study how a company works. A politician might study a big war or a small campaign.

Some studies look at just one thing. This is called within-case research. Other studies look at many things. This is called cross-case research. Researchers do not always pick things at random. Sometimes they pick an extreme case. These are things that are very unusual. Picking unusual things can help people learn more.

Case studies help us find new ideas. They can help us build a theory. A theory is a set of ideas to explain how things work. Charles Darwin used case studies to learn about life. He studied animals on the Galapagos Islands. These studies help us see the full story. They show us why things happen in the real world.
