Carcassonne is a famous board game for two to five players.

It is a tile-based game where players build a medieval landscape together. The game is named after a fortified town in southern France. This real town is very well known for its huge city walls. People love this game because it lets you create a map as you play. It has become very popular around the world. Many people play different versions on computers, consoles, or mobile phones.

To play, you start with one tile face up on the table. There are 71 other tiles shuffled and placed face down. On your turn, you must draw one new tile. You place it next to tiles that are already on the table. You must match the features on the edges of the tiles. For example, roads must connect to roads and cities must connect to cities.

You cannot connect features using only the corners of the tiles. If a tile does not fit anywhere, you can put it back. This way of playing makes the map grow bigger every turn.

After you place a tile, you can choose to place a marker. These markers are called followers, or sometimes "meeple." You can place a meeple on a road, city, cloister, or field. A meeple on a road is called a thief or highwayman. A meeple in a city is a knight. A meeple in a cloister is a monk. A meeple in a field is a farmer.

When you place a farmer, you lay the meeple down flat. This shows that fields are not scored until the very end. Each player has eight followers to use during the game.

Scoring happens when you complete a feature on the board. A city is complete when it has no more open edges. A road is complete if it forms a loop or ends at villages. A cloister is complete when it is surrounded by eight tiles.

When a feature is finished, the player with the most followers earns points. After scoring, that player takes their meeple back to use again. For example, a completed cloister earns nine points for the tile plus eight for the neighbors. You must be careful not to let others connect to your features.

This game has a long history of different rules and editions. Klaus-Jürgen Wrede designed the game, and it was first published in 2000. It won important awards like the Spiel des Jahres in 2001.

Over the years, the rules for scoring cities and fields have changed. The current rules are part of the third edition. This edition is used in all new versions and expansions. Even though the rules have evolved, the joy of building a world remains the same.
