Diplomacy is a famous strategic board game. It is all about making deals and making choices. Most board games use dice to see what happens. Diplomacy is different because it has no dice. There is no luck or random chance in this game. Instead, players must rely on their own skills. They use talking and thinking to win.

This game is special because it focuses on how people work together. You can form alliances to help each other. You can also break a promise to gain an advantage. This makes every game feel very intense and exciting.

The game works in a very specific way. It is divided into two seasons called Spring and Fall. Each season has two parts: negotiation and movement. First, players talk to each other to plan. They can share secrets or even tell lies. After talking, everyone writes down secret orders for their units. These units are called armies or fleets.

When everyone shows their orders, the moves happen all at once. This means you cannot react to a move before it happens. You must plan ahead and trust your own strategy.

Allan B. Calhamer created this game in 1954. He studied history and geography at Harvard University. He wanted to make a game about how countries act. He also looked at the game of chess for ideas. He liked how chess uses a set number of pieces. He also looked at a card game called Hearts. In that game, players often team up against a leader. Calhamer released the game for people to buy in 1959.

The game board is a map of Europe from the year 1901. It includes Turkey, Syria, and North Africa. There are fifty-six land regions and nineteen sea regions. Seven Great Powers start the game. These are Austria-Hungary, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, and Turkey. Each player wants to control supply centers. There are 34 supply centers on the map. If a player gets 18 of them, they win.

Controlling more centers lets you build more armies and fleets.

Diplomacy has a very long history of being played in many ways. It was the first big game played by mail. People would write their moves on paper and send them. Later, people began playing by email in the late 1980s. Today, many people play it on the Internet. You can play against a human or a computer.
