Many people use ropes to go down steep drops. This is called abseiling, or rappelling. You might also use a raft to float through a canyon.

Canyons are often made of hard rock. They might be limestone, granite, or sandstone. Many canyons have waterfalls and green pools.

People do this sport all over the world. In the United States, some call it canyoneering. In South Africa, people call it kloofing.

It is important to be safe. Canyons can be remote and hard to reach. Flash floods can happen if it rains far away. This makes the water rise very fast. People wear gear to stay safe. They use helmets and ropes. They also wear wetsuits to stay warm in cold water.
