arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Canasta is a famous card game. Its name means "basket" in Spanish.

It belongs to the Rummy family of games. Two people work as a team. Most games use four players. You will need two decks of cards. This makes 108 or 110 cards in total.

Players try to make melds. A meld is a set of cards with the same rank. You can use wild cards to help. These cards can act as any rank you need. A very special meld is called a canasta. This is a set of at least seven cards. You can make a natural canasta with only regular cards. You can also make a mixed canasta with wild cards.

Two men made the game in 1939. They lived in Uruguay. They wanted a fast and fun game. It spread quickly through South America. Later, it became popular in the United States. People still play it in clubs today. It is a classic game for many people.
