It began in France during the 1800s. Some say it came from a game in Sweden. Others think it grew from older French games. The name may mean "association."

To play, you need two packs of cards. You must remove all cards lower than a seven. This leaves a 64-card pack.

Players deal cards in a pattern of three, two, and three. One card is turned face up. This card picks the trump suit.

Players win tricks to earn points. You can also show special sets of cards. These sets are called melds. You must hold the cards in your hand to show a meld. Some melds give many points. For example, four aces are worth 100 points. Four kings are worth 80 points. You can also score points for "brisques." These are aces and tens.

Famous people like Winston Churchill loved this game. It helped lead to the game Pinochle. People in the United States still play it today. You usually play until someone reaches 1,000 points.
