A cam follower is a special part that rolls along a track.

It helps machines move by following a shape called a cam lobe. There are two main ways these parts attach to machines. Stud style followers have a rod called a stud. Yoke style followers have a hole through the middle.

Most followers use small rollers to move smoothly. These are called needle rollers. Some use a cage to keep the rollers apart. A cage helps the part move at high speeds. It also holds more oil to keep it slippery. For very heavy work, parts use larger rollers.

Some followers use a plastic bushing instead of rollers. This is good for light work. These parts do not need extra oil to work.

Sometimes the outside of the follower is curved. We call this a crowned shape. This shape helps if the parts do not line up perfectly. It keeps the load even so the part does not slip.

Many followers have a small hole. This hole lets you add oil. This helps the part stay smooth over time.
