Cam follower

A cam follower helps machines move in specific ways. It is a special type of bearing that follows a shape called a cam lobe.

These parts are very important for moving parts along a set path. There are two main ways they attach to a machine. Stud style followers use a rod called a stud to mount. Yoke style followers have a hole through the middle to attach. Both styles help turn motion into useful work.

How these parts work depends on what is inside them. Many use needle rollers to handle high radial loads. A caged needle roller design uses a cage to keep rollers separate. This allows the part to move at higher speeds. The cage also holds more lubrication to keep things smooth. For very heavy work, a roller design uses two rows of larger rollers. This helps the part handle more weight and some thrust loads.

People have been improving these parts for a long time. The modern stud type follower was invented in 1937. A man named Thomas L. Robinson patented this design. He worked for the McGill Manufacturing Company. Before this, people used a standard bearing and a bolt. His new design was much easier to use. It also helped machines handle much higher loads.

There are many specific details about how they are made. A cam follower often has a black oxide finish to stop rust. Some have a lubrication hole to add oil later.

The outer part is often thick to prevent bending. This is because the load hits only one single point. Some followers are even crowned, which means they have a curved shape. A crowned follower can handle 0.5 degrees of misalignment. A standard cylindrical shape can only handle 0.06 degrees.

You can see these ideas in many different machines. For example, some followers use a plastic bushing for light work. These do not need oil and are great for slow speeds.

Other versions are called track followers. These might have a V-groove to follow a V-shaped track. They can even have a flange to follow a lip. Whether they use rollers or bushings, they keep motion steady. This helps everything from small tools to huge machines run well.
