Ball joint

technology Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A ball joint is a very important part of a car.

It connects the wheels to the car's suspension and steering. These parts work much like the joints in your own body.

Rotula

They allow the wheels to move in many directions at once. This helps a driver steer and keeps the ride smooth on bumpy roads. Most cars use these parts in the front suspension. They can also be found in the rear of some high-performance cars.

How does a ball joint work?

It is made of a steel bearing stud and a socket. The stud is tapered and threaded to fit into a hole. A rubber-like boot covers the whole assembly. This boot keeps dirt out and keeps grease inside. This grease helps the parts move without rubbing too hard. Some joints even use an internal spring to stop them from vibrating. These parts allow the wheel to rotate while staying in place.

In the past, cars used a different part called a kingpin.

Kingpins were harder to use because they required very precise parts. They also made it difficult to adjust how the wheels sat. Using ball joints changed everything for car makers. Ball joints allow for much better control of the car. They make the steering easier and the ride much quieter. This can even help car tires last longer on the road.

There are many different types of these joints.

Tie-rod

Some cars use a MacPherson strut system with only two ball joints. Others use an upper and a lower ball joint. The lower joint often does more work because of braking forces. Some special parts are called spherical rolling joints.

Srjoint
Srjoint

These use tiny ball bearings to move with very little friction. They are used in high-precision machines like robots. These parts are built to be very strong and exact.

It is very important to keep these parts working well.

If a ball joint fails, the wheel can move the wrong way. This can make a car very hard to control. You might hear clicking, popping, or squeaking sounds if they wear out. Modern cars use sealed joints that are "lubed for life." This means they do not need extra grease added by the owner. Keeping them safe helps everyone on the road.
