Ball joint

technology Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A ball joint is a very important part of a car.

It connects the wheels to the rest of the car. These parts work much like the joints in your own body.

They allow the wheels to move in many directions at once. This helps a driver steer the car and stay smooth on bumpy roads.

Most ball joints are made of strong steel. They have a ball shape that fits into a socket. A rubber boot covers the joint. This boot keeps dirt out and keeps grease inside.

This grease helps the parts move without rubbing too hard. Many modern cars use sealed ball joints. This means they are "lubed for life." They do not need extra oil to stay working.

It is important that these parts stay strong. If a ball joint breaks, the wheel can move the wrong way. This can make the car hard to control.

Mechanics look for sounds like clicking or popping to see if a joint is worn out. Keeping them in good shape helps the car stay safe.
