A feeler gauge is a tool used to measure gaps.

It helps people find the width of a tiny space. Most sets have many thin strips of steel. These strips are called leaves or blades. Each blade has a different thickness. The thickness is marked on every piece.

Some blades are parallel. This means they are the same width all the way. Other blades are tapered. A tapered blade gets thinner at one end. You can stack several blades together. This helps you measure a space between two sizes.

Some sets use thin wires instead of blades. These wires help set the gap in spark plugs. You move the parts until the wire just fits. Most gauges are made of stainless steel. Some sets include a brass blade. This is for old electronic ignition systems. They need a metal that is non-ferrous. That means the metal does not contain iron.
