Burlesque is a special way of making people laugh through imitation. It works by taking serious works and making them look silly or ridiculous.

People use this style in books, music, and theater to create a funny effect. It often uses caricature, which means making something look exaggerated. You might also hear it called parody or travesty. This style relies on the audience knowing the original subject to understand the joke.

In writing, burlesque is often split into two different types. High burlesque uses a very fancy and serious style to talk about small or silly things. A famous example is Alexander Pope's poem, "The Rape of the Lock." Low burlesque does the opposite by using funny or common words for serious topics. Samuel Butler wrote a poem called "Hudibras" using this low style. His work was so popular that other people wrote parodies of it. This way of writing helps people see the humor in serious subjects.

Music can also be burlesque by mixing serious and funny sounds together.

In the 1800s, many composers used this to create a bright or high-spirited mood. Richard Strauss wrote a piece for piano and orchestra called "Burleske" in 1890. Other musicians, like Béla Bartók, wrote burlesque pieces for the piano in 1904 and 1911. Sometimes, a composer will use dance rhythms to make a piece feel playful. This can happen in big symphonies or even in jazz music. It is a way to keep the music feeling lively and unexpected.

During the Victorian era, burlesque became a very popular kind of theater.

These shows were often musical plays that mocked famous operas or ballets. Actors might wear historical clothes but act out modern, silly activities. This mix of old and new created a sense of absurdity. In London, these shows were popular from the 1830s to the 1890s. Some shows used popular songs, while others had original music written just for them. It was a time of great creativity in the theater.

In the United States, the term burlesque took on a different meaning later on. From the 1860s to the 1940s, it referred to variety shows in clubs and theaters.

These performances often included comedy and striptease. Hollywood films later tried to show the spirit of these shows. You can see examples in the 1972 film "Cabaret" or the 1979 film "All That Jazz." Since the 1990s, there has been a new interest in this type of performance. It remains a unique way for people to share humor and skill.
