It works by making serious things look silly. This can happen in books, music, or plays. People often use it to mock famous stories or songs.

In writing, there are two main types. High burlesque uses fancy words for small things. An example is Alexander Pope's "The Rape of the Lock." Low burlesque uses funny words for serious topics. Samuel Butler wrote a famous poem called "Hudibras" this way.

Music can be burlesque, too. It often has a bright or happy mood. Composers might mix serious sounds with funny ones. Richard Strauss wrote a piece for piano called "Burleske." Some musical pieces even use dance rhythms to feel playful.

In the 1800s, burlesque became popular in theaters. These shows were often musical plays. They might take a famous opera and turn it into a comedy.

Actors would use modern actions in old settings. This mix made the shows very funny for the audience.
