It features a rider on a bucking horse. These horses are often called broncs or broncos. The horse tries to throw the rider off. This sport is a highly stylized competition. Many organizations like the PRCA recognize it. People love the skill and power shown here. It is a test of strength for everyone.

A rider starts inside a bucking chute. This is a small wooden or pipe enclosure. When the gate opens, the horse bursts out. The rider must stay on for eight seconds. They must not touch the horse with their free hand. At the start, they must "mark the horse out." This means their boot heels must touch the horse. They must do this before the horse's front legs hit the ground.

This sport grew from real ranch work. Cowboys had to break and train horses. They would compete to see who rode best. The first sanctioned championships were in 1901. These were held in places like Denver, Colorado. In 1902, Harry Henry Brennan won events in Wyoming. People call him the "father of modern bronc riding."

In saddle bronc, riders use a special saddle. They use a single rein made of cotton or polyester. In bareback riding, there is no saddle. Riders use a rigging with a leather handle. Earl Bascom invented the first one-hand rigging. He made it from rubber belting in 1924. He later made better ones from leather and rawhide.

Judges give scores to both the horse and rider. Each gets a score from 0 to 50. The total score is added together. A score in the 90s is exceptional.

Most bucking horses are mares or geldings. They are specially bred for agility and strength. These horses are valuable investments for contractors. They are kept healthy with vaccinations and care. This helps them perform well for many years.
