Bronc riding is a fast rodeo event.

It started from ranch work. Cowboys had to train wild horses. Today, it is a big sport with strict rules.

A rider starts in a small pen called a bucking chute. When the gate opens, the horse bursts out. The rider must stay on for eight seconds. They must use only one hand. If they touch the horse with their free hand, they are out.

There are two main styles. In saddle bronc riding, the rider uses a special saddle.

In bareback riding, there is no saddle. Instead, the rider holds a leather handle called a rigging.

Judges give points to both the horse and the rider. They look at the rider's balance and power. They also look at the horse's speed and strength. The scores are added together for a final total. A score in the 90s is very special.

These horses are not wild. Many are bred for their strength and skill. They are kept healthy so they can compete for many years.
