A cowboy rides a horse at full speed. He chases a steer, which is a large animal.

The cowboy leans off his horse to grab the steer's horns. He then pulls the steer off balance. He must get the steer to the ground to win. This part of the event is very quick. It often takes only three to ten seconds.

This sport has a very long history. It began with bullfighters in Ancient Greece. Later, a Black cowboy named Bill Pickett invented the modern way. He was a famous performer in Wild West shows. In a rodeo, a helper called a hazer rides nearby. The hazer helps the steer run in a straight line. The cowboy must be careful. If he breaks the rope barrier too early, he gets a penalty. If he misses the steer, he gets no time at all. Most steers used today weigh between 450 and 650 pounds.
