Barrel racing is a fast rodeo event. A horse and rider race around three metal barrels.

These barrels are set in a triangle. Most riders follow a cloverleaf pattern. This means they run in a shape like a three-leaf clover.

Speed is the main goal. The fastest time wins the race. A timer starts when the pair crosses the start line. The timer stops when they cross the finish line. You can use a judge with a flag or a laser system to track time. If a horse hits a barrel, it adds five seconds to the time. This usually makes it too slow to win. If a rider misses the pattern, they get no score at all.

This sport takes great skill. The horse must be strong and smart. It must be able to turn quickly.

Riders use special gear to stay safe. They wear western hats, boots, and long shirts. Horses often wear boots on their legs to prevent injury.
