It began in 1892 at Smith College. A teacher named Senda Berenson taught the game. She wanted to help women stay healthy. At first, the rules were different. There were nine players on each team. The court was split into three areas. Players could not cross the lines. They could only dribble the ball three times.

Early players had to wear special clothes. They wore long skirts or loose pants called bloomers.

These clothes helped them move. Today, the game is very popular. Players compete in many leagues. The WNBA is a big league in North America. There are also big games in the Olympics.

Teams play on a rectangular court. They try to shoot a ball into a hoop. Women use a ball that is smaller than the men's ball. This ball is a size 6. It is about one inch smaller in size.
