Bull riding is a fast and intense rodeo sport.

A rider sits on the back of a large, bucking bull. The animal tries to throw the person off by kicking, spinning, and twisting. To get a score, the rider must stay mounted for eight seconds. They hold onto a flat, braided rope with only one hand.

If the rider touches the bull or themselves with their free hand, the ride does not count. This sport is often called the most dangerous eight seconds in sports.

There is a specific way the competition works.

First, the bull and rider are matched together. The rider sits in a small enclosure called a bucking chute. When the chute opens, the bull storms into the arena. The rider must keep their free hand up in the air. If they reach the eight-second mark, a loud buzzer or whistle sounds.

Bullfighters stay close to the bull to help protect the rider. If a bull refuses to leave, a wrangler on horseback uses a rope to guide it away.

This sport has a long and interesting history. It has roots in ancient Minoan culture. The direct roots come from Mexican traditions called charreada. These were contests of ranching and riding skills. In the 1700s, a priest named Rafael Landivar wrote about riders using spears.

Later, in 1839, Frances Erskine Inglis wrote about the amazing skill of Mexican riders. By the mid-1800s, these skills moved to ranches in Texas and California. In 1852, H. L. Kinney staged one of the first organized events in the southwest.

Scoring is a big part of the professional game.

In the PRCA, a perfect score is 100 points. Judges give points to both the bull and the rider. Two judges score the bull's strength and agility for up to 25 points. Two other judges score the rider's performance for up to 25 points. Most professional riders score between 75 and 89 points. In some events, the top 20 riders move to a final round called the "short go." If a bull falls, a rider might even ask for a reride.

Bull riding is now a global sport with many fans. It is popular in Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and Australia.

Many people follow the Professional Bull Riders, or PBR. This group has held big events in Las Vegas for nearly 30 years. Since 2022, their big events have moved to the Dallas–Fort Worth area. The bulls are very important too. Each bull has a unique name and a brand number. To keep them safe, the tips of their horns are often shaved down.
