This shape helps people living in hot, sunny places. The tall crown acts as insulation to keep the head cool. The wide brim provides shade from the bright sun. Many people wear these hats today for work or fun. Ranch workers in Brazil and the United States use them. Musicians and rodeo riders also love this style.

Making a hat is a very careful job. Most modern hats are made from straw or leather. Many are made from fur-based felt.

Inside the hat, a sweatband helps it stay on the head. On the outside, there is often a decorative band. People can make their hats look special in different ways. They might crease the top or roll the brim. Some even add strings to keep the hat from blowing away. These styles can show which ranch a person works on.

These hats have a long and interesting history. They were inspired by older styles like the Mexican sombrero.

In 1865, a man named J. B. Stetson made the first modern version. He called his design the "Boss of the Plains." It was a lightweight and waterproof hat. The original hats had four-inch crowns and brims. Some were made of high-quality beaver felt. These expensive hats cost thirty dollars back then. Others were simpler and cost only five dollars.

Many different names and styles have appeared over time. Some people call large hats "ten-gallon" hats. This name might come from the Spanish word "tan galán," which means "really handsome."

It does not actually mean the hat holds ten gallons of water. In Canada, the city of Calgary has a special white hat. Morris Shumiatcher created this white felt hat in 1946. It is now a symbol of the Calgary Stampede rodeo. The white hat is even part of the city flag.

Cowboy hats connect many different cultures together. In New Zealand, Māori tribes called "Ngā Kaupoi" wear them.

These people are known as "the cowboys" because they use horses. In Hawaii, workers called "paniolo" wear hats made from pandanus leaves. These hats look like the Mexican sombrero. The cowboy hat has also become a symbol of the American West. Many people recognize it from old movies and stories. It remains a very important part of life for many people.
